What is RU 486?

RU 486 is a combination of medications given as a medical abortion procedure to terminate a confirmed pregnancy. Proper administration of the RU 486 should only be done under the guidance of a physician and after a very thorough medical exam. Is the abortion pill the same thing as the morning-after pill?

No. The abortion pill is not the same as the morning-after pill. The RU 486, also known as the abortion pill, is not the same as the morning-after pill. However, both the RU 486 and the morning-after pill should be seen as a serious drug treatment that does have potential risks and complications even when taken properly under medical supervision. Are there risks to taking the abortion pill?

Yes. The RU 486 is a drug and as with any drug on the market, there are significant risks and potential complications associated with the use of RU 486. Some of the complications you may experience are:

  • Abdominal cramping and pain, often severe
  • An infection which can be life-threatening
  • Heavy and persistent bleeding which can be a medical emergency
  • An incomplete abortion requiring surgical intervention

Is RU 486 reversible?

Yes. If you have taken RU 486 and wish to reverse its effects, there are options. However, time is important. The sooner you call, the better.
