What To Expect After Taking the Abortion Pill
The abortion pill consists of two drugs, mifepristone and misoprostol. These drugs work by causing uterine cramping and vaginal bleeding to end the pregnancy and pass pregnancy tissue.
Bleeding is usually the heaviest after taking the second drug, misoprostol, then tapers off after a few days. Common side effects of a medical abortion include: fever, diarrhea, chills, headache, and vomiting.
Warning Signs That Need Emergency Care
If you experience symptoms that worsen, last longer than expected, or feel concerning, contact a healthcare provider immediately.
Some warning signs you should seek emergency care include:
- Heavy bleeding, such as soaking through 2 pads per hour for 2 hours
- Passing blood clots larger than a lemon or ongoing heavy clotting for 2 hours or more
- Signs you are still pregnant
- Severe pain in your stomach or back
- Vomiting or diarrhea for more than 24 hours
- Bad-smelling vaginal discharge
- Dizziness or signs of weakness
- A fever over 100.4°F (38°C) or any fever lasting more than 24 hours
There is a risk of an incomplete abortion and infection after taking the abortion pill. Follow-up medical care may be needed to identify and manage any complications.
