After an abortion, it’s important to monitor how you’re feeling both physically and emotionally. While some physical side effects are expected, warning signs exist that can indicate something more serious and require immediate attention.

At InnerVisions HealthCare, we’re here to support you with accurate information. Remember, if you’re unsure whether what you’re experiencing is normal, it’s always best to seek help as soon as possible.

Keep reading to learn what signs to look for that indicate medical attention is needed.

Understanding Expected Side Effects

Whether you’ve had a medical or surgical abortion, certain side effects will occur.

Medical abortion typically involves two drugs: mifepristone and misoprostol. Mifepristone ends the pregnancy by blocking progesterone, and misoprostol causes the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy. Vaginal bleeding and abdominal cramping will occur when these drugs are taken, and additional side effects like nausea or a headache can also be present.

For surgical procedures like dilation and curettage (D&C), bleeding and mild cramping may continue for a few days afterward.

Knowing the Warning Signs

Heavy bleeding is the most frequently reported concern after abortion. While bleeding is normal, soaking through two or more pads per hour for two hours in a row after a medical abortion could signal a complication. Similarly, changing pads every hour after a surgical abortion is also cause for concern.

If this occurs, contact your healthcare provider immediately or visit the nearest emergency room.

Additional signs to watch for after a medical abortion include:

  • Bad pain in the stomach area or pelvis
  • Chills or body aches
  • Fast heart rate
  • A fever that lasts more than four hours or that starts in the days after you take misoprostol
  • Foul-smelling vaginal discharge

Signs to pay attention to after a surgical abortion include:

  • Prolonged dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Fever
  • Cramping that lasts more than 48 hours
  • Pain that worsens instead of improving
  • Foul-smelling vaginal discharge

These signs may indicate infection, incomplete abortion, or another medical issue. You are deserving of help if you feel something is “off.”
